Interesting article:

Spa treatments for young girls

Society is pretty weird now. As a dancer, I have been in shows that also had kids in them - and some of the young kids in the shows were getting manicures, highlights, expensive haircuts, etc.

The article talks about an "ugly phase" and I definitely had one. The end of 6th grade and the beginning of 7th were definitely NOT my most flattering years. However, I survived and am happy with the way that I look now.

Now at 24, I get messages occasionally, highlight my hair (went this morning at 9 am!) but it wouldn't even have occurred to me or my friends in middle school. Getting your hair and nails done for prom was like, the big thing! A weekly blowout at 6 is just not normal...

Interesting read.

Thanks for posting the link - I'm way bored at work and it was definitely interesting. I can't believe how so mothers can be; especially with a bikini wax, that's nuts!

I had my awkward phase too, it was from 7th-9th grade and was dreadful - I had huge hair (no straightner yet and it was simply unruly), bushy eyebrows and a lot of extra poundage PLUS glasses and braces. There is one photo of me with all of the above and an oversized windbreaker at a baseball game in 8th grade, but heck at least I was a happy kid...and I turned out fine!

That is very strange to me, too. I don't think I would take my daughter (if I had one) to get anything other than a haircut at least until highschool! And even then, I think it would be limited. Not like - highlights and stuff on a monthly basis ya know! That adds up. I suppose if they had a job and were paying for those things themselves, it would be different. But CHILDREN!? No way. I think I'd rather paint their nails myself anyway :) Bonding time, not spending lots of money time.

And I feel ya on the awkward stage, only - mine lasted like 6th - 8th grade, when they were yanking all my teeth out, giving me braces, and I had terribly ugly glasses, all during that time. Sucked! Happy to say that the women in my family (myself included) look better, the older they get! I think I look better this year than I did last year, and last year better than I did the year before, etc etc..

So speaking of hair, I'm still dying for you to try a fun new cut! What did you have done the other day??

No fun new cuts for me!
It's a few inches shorter - just to get off the dead ends, and the front is just a face frame. I probably won't do anything daring. I really wouldn't be attractive - I'm tall, my hair is really fine, and the proportions would be odd with strange hair, and my hair won't hold crazy layers well.

I read that! :) My friend sent it to me a few weeks ago, and he's as wtf as we are. I was chatting with my eyebrow waxer about this and it's not uncommon for parents to want a brazilian bikini wax for their 12 year old daughters who want them. She said that she'd never do it, but it happens.

Oh, and my awkward stage was also in grades 6 and 7. & on top of that, I developed earlier than most of my classmates and got much unwanted attention from the boys.

My sister is in grade 7 now and she gets her eyebrows waxed. She doesn't want to but sadly my mom pressures her. :(

that's too..much. these girls will never be able to appreciate their natural looks. this is how eating disorders and our country's skewed perception of what women look like are developed.

bikini waxed at 10?! what the hell are they waxing off other than their childhood!

i totally had an awkward stage..at the time i thought it was cool ha ha. i mean bad pictures are fun..i mean..they will be eventually ha ha.
